Location: Pittsburg, PA
Date: February 3, 2015
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) awarded the prestigious LEED® Platinum certification to the Navy Ordnance Cargo Logistics Training and Maintenance buildings at Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown, Virginia. Michael Baker International designed both facilities as part of a design-build project.
“We are deeply committed to making a difference in our world through green and sustainable design solutions,” said Bob Schlesinger, P.E., LEED AP BD+C, vice president and Navy national market leader at Michael Baker International. “This project is one of many that our firm designed with the goal of not only creating an innovative, top-tier facility, but bettering our environment as well. We are honored to have been a part of this project and contributed to this certification effort.”
The Navy complex includes a two-story, 21,835-gross-square-foot logistics building and a 15,011-gross-square-foot vehicle maintenance building which earned 54 out of a possible 69 points on the LEED v2.2 rating system. According to the USGBC, approximately 6 percent of LEED certified projects have attained a LEED Platinum certification.
“The Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic’s Hampton Roads Integrated Product Team is extremely proud to see this project achieve the highest LEED certification,” noted NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic Design Manager Allen McDonald. This project aligns with the Navy’s commitment of meeting LEED standards on all military building design and construction projects.
Features that helped the Michael Baker International team attain LEED Platinum certification include solar energy, optimized lighting designs, water-efficient landscaping, custom indoor water fixtures, fuel-efficient and vanpool parking spaces, bicycle racks, and the selection of sustainable and Forest Stewardship Council certified materials for interior finishes and furnishings. The sustainable solutions maximize overall efficiency, reduce energy and water costs by nearly 50 percent, and save over 200,000 gallons of water annually.
