East Brawley Geothermal Power Plant Environmental Impact Report

Location: Imperial County, California

Michael Baker International prepared an Environmental Impact Report for a 49.9 net megawatt geothermal power plant located in Imperial County. The geothermal plant site is owned by Ormat Nevada Inc., aka ORNI 19, LLC, and consists of one parcel of 33.7 acres. In addition, there were 39 leased parcels encompassing approximately 3,033 acres that will contain proposed wells and pipelines. The project included development of a power plant onsite with associated maintenance facilities, production and injection wells and associated piping, blowdown wells, water pumping facilities to bring water to the power plant, and installation of a power substation and a 2-mile-long transmission line. The project will connect to the Brawley Wastewater Treatment Facility to receive tertiary treated water for cooling purposes. Key environmental issues associated with the project included agricultural resources, biological resources, air quality, water resources, hazardous materials, and geotechnical concerns. In addition, the project was closely monitored and commented on by the California Union for Reliable Energy (CURE).
