Location: Mount Airy, NC
Michael Baker International worked with the Resource Institute and the City of Mount Airy to restore 15,000 Linear Feet of the Ararat River in the Yadkin-Pee Dee River Basin, in Surry County, North Carolina. In addition, Michael Baker designed three community parks and more than 1.5 miles of greenway that links the parks along the Ararat River corridor as part of this on-going project. The project is being funded through grants from the NC Clean Water Management Trust Fund (CWMTF), the NC Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF), and the NC Division of Water Resources. The project combines restoration of a large river with design of a greenway and three parks to provide improved recreational and ecotourism opportunities for the City of Mount Airy.
Designs for the river restoration, trail greenway, parks and structural components were developed entirely by Michael Baker staff, and were developed within budget and on schedule. The Michael Baker team provided construction oversight during the construction of the project over a 12-month period.
