Location: Fullerton, CA
Michael Baker International was retained by the City of Fullerton Redevelopment Agency to develop an urban design program for two alleys in the City’s SOCO (South of Commonwealth) District. The SOCO District was emerging from its warehouse roots as a Downtown Fullerton destination of dining and entertainment venues. Employing a significant community involvement effort, Michael Baker worked with merchants, property owners, and City staff and officials to create alternative alleyscape concepts that foster a pedestrian-friendly environment while maintaining the functionality of the alleys and being true to the authenticity of the SOCO District. The alleyscape concepts considered design details related to hardscape, landscape, convertible parking areas (into public plazas), gateways, wayfinding signage, lighting, infrastructure, and architecture. The Fullerton Alleyscape project was a recipient of the California Downtown Association (CDA) Crystal Eagle Award.
