Blennerhasset Island Bridge

Location: Washington County, OH & Wood County, WV

Built to carry Appalachian Corridor D over the Ohio River, the 878-foot Blennerhassett Island Bridge is the longest network tied arch bridge in the US and among the longest in the world. Michael Baker International’s design incorporated innovative approaches and elements never before employed in a major West Virginia bridge project, including a unique tied girder configuration to achieve redundancy; longitudinal post-tensioning in the concrete deck to limit stress; maximum use of weathering high-performance steel to reduce project costs; and inclined hangars that utilized stay cables to facilitate hangar replacement.
