Development of FHWA’s Bridge Inspection Training Manual

Nationwide

Michael Baker partnered with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and National Highway Institute (NHI) to author what today is called the Bridge Inspector’s Reference Manual. The document, revised and updated numerous times since 2002, provides a comprehensive manual on programs, procedures and techniques for inspecting and evaluating in-service highway bridges. Michael Baker also has worked with the FHWA and NHI to develop several training courses for bridge inspectors on bridge safety inspection, engineering concepts and fracture critical inspection.

The new manual encompasses the information required to inspect steel, concrete, timber, and masonry bridges and will serve as the single comprehensive reference for the bridge inspector, engineer and owner.

Impact

“We are proud to work with FHWA in taking a very good bridge inspection reference manual used throughout the country and the world and making it better. The revised manual will incorporate the latest information on bridge inspection and deficiency reporting. The revised manual will reduce repetition and make it more user-friendly. Hundreds of photographs are being updated.”
