Indian Wells Tennis Garden

Indian Wells, California

Located near Palm Springs, the Indian Wells Tennis Garden is the third largest tennis stadium in the U.S. and second largest outdoor stadium in the world. The 122-acre tennis and event complex attracts more than 460,000 spectators each March to watch top athletes compete in the world-famous BNP Paribas Open, the largest ATP World Tour Masters 1000 and WTA Premier combined event in the world.

Michael Baker provided planning, environmental, engineering and construction support services for the project. Due to the client’s tight schedule, we fast-tracked the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) to obtain entitlements in just eight months, a process which normally takes 12 months or longer to complete for a project of this size. The original design and construction of the facility was completed in 2000.

In 2013, our team prepared on-site and off-site improvement plans for a planned $75 million, 24-acre expansion. After only 10 months and 10 days of construction, the new 8,000-seat Stadium 2 opened, with new three restaurants overlooking the court, 1,800 additional parking spaces, east gate and entry, media center and a 19,000-square-foot shade structure. We provided planning, grading design, street design, pedestrian tunnels, drainage, water and wastewater design, mapping, traffic and noise analysis and EIR preparation to support the massive expansion effort.

Standard of Excellence

“We’re proud to have helped our client develop and expand a world-class tennis destination that mirrors the desert aesthetic of California’s Coachella Valley. Today, the venue offers guests an enhanced and regionally unique tennis experience.”
