Kaiser Permanente Central San Diego Hospital

San Diego, California

The new Kaiser Central San Diego Hospital sits on 20 acres and includes a seven-story, 566,000-square-foot hospital with 321 beds to serve more than 610,000 Kaiser Permanente members in San Diego. The site also includes a 180,000-square-foot support building, 36,000-square-foot central utility plant, loading dock and surface and structured parking for 1,800 cars. The site was master planned to allow for future expansion. The development of the site includes new roadways, utilities and landscaping, as well as healing gardens and therapeutic outdoor space for the patients and community to enjoy.

The hospital was designed with sustainability in mind. The facility integrates energy efficient technologies to produce its own electricity, heat and cooling. The building also was designed to utilize rainwater, recycled waste and prefabricated elements to reduce waste. The urban setting allows for easy access to nearby services and public transportation. The structured parking incorporates preferred spots for fuel efficient vehicles, thereby eliminating the heat island effect. As a result of these sustainability measures, this is the first health care facility in California, the second in the US and the third in the world to achieve LEED Platinum certification.

Michael Baker provided planning and engineering services for the demolition and redevelopment of the 20-acre site and designed a 65-foot retaining wall along Clairemont Mesa Boulevard to help facilitate traffic flow. In addition to land surveying, civil engineering design and stormwater management, our team provided master planning and entitlement support and developed a 3-D site model.

Our stormwater quality services helped to reduce runoff, as well as provide on-site treatment to improve runoff quality. The site was restored with native, drought-resistant plants and reclaimed water or wastewater from the mechanical system was used to irrigate the site.

Cutting-edge technological innovations were incorporated to enhance the patient experience and help the hospital run more efficiently and safely.

Standard of Excellence

“This state-of-the-art facility provides an innovative, connected healthcare experience accessible to all, which sets a high bar for smarter, greener care.”
