Navy Gateway Inns and Suites

Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island

The new 103,831-square-foot Navy Gateway Inns and Suites (NGIS) significantly improves the quality of the guest experience, incorporating the latest and best trends and innovations that the hospitality industry has to offer.

Michael Baker served as the designer of record for the NGIS project, which includes 194 guest rooms, six guest suites, front-of-house public areas, and back-of-house support areas. Additional features include utility infrastructure, landscaping, parking, exterior terrace and amenities.

This facility sets a benchmark for prioritizing the guest experience. Our design team, recognizing NGIS’s prominent location in Newport, Rhode Island, developed a coordinated site and architectural design to maximize the building’s visual appeal to the community and visitors, including maximizing harbor and marina views and open space.

The project was instrumental in establishing the “signature” image for future NGIS facilities. The seven-story L-shaped building faces Coaster’s Harbor and features landscaped, terraced exterior patios extending the two-story lobby lounge toward water views. The patio features seating walls, illuminated exterior artwork and areas for al fresco dining and informal gatherings.  Additional amenities accessible from the patio include a fire pit and outdoor kitchen as well as walkways and seating areas along the harbor.

During construction, our team utilized modular fabrication techniques, such as creatively employing light-gage, panelized metal framing systems to provide a less costly solution.

Ultimately, the facility was designed to obtain LEED® Silver certification. We used the latest energy modeling software to determine the optimal design to achieve energy efficiencies. Sustainable elements incorporated into the project include light reflective interior finishes, Energy Star® compliant equipment throughout and a continuous exterior wall and roof air barrier to reduce air leakage.

Impact

“As the newest hotel in the Navy’s nationwide portfolio, this project ensures that the more than 10,000 people who work on the naval base and 17,000 students who pass through every year have a comfortable place to stay where they can focus on work.”
